Operations

Operations Division

The Division is led by the Deputy Chief and is divided into battalions A, B, and C. Each battalion is led by two Battalion Chiefs, reporting directly to the Deputy Chief.

In addition to the Deputy Chief and Battalion Chiefs, members assigned to the Operations Division include:

  • 8 Captains
  • 16 Lieutenants
  • 24 Engineers
  • 37 Firefighter / Paramedics
  • 37 Firefighter / EMTs.

Four of the District's Lieutenants are also certified as paramedics. Each of the District's eight fire apparatus are staffed with a minimum of four personnel, and each of the District's ambulances are staffed with at least two personnel.

The Operations Division responds to thousands of 911 calls each year

The most common call types are:

  • Emergency Medical Incidents
  • Motor Vehicle Accidents
  • Alarms
  • Fires

A first alarm response to a residential house fire includes

  • 3 Engines
  • 1 Tower or 1 Rescue
  • 1 Ambulance
  • 2 Battalion Chiefs

Additionally, an engine is moved to the vicinity of the fire but remains in service to provide an additional resource if needed.

Large or complex fires may involve a response from

  • 6 Engines
  • 1 Tower or 1 Rescue
  • 2 Ambulances
  • 2 Battalion Chiefs,
  • Deputy Chief and / or Fire Chief.

In those instances, neighboring fire departments provide staffed engines within the District to maintain the high quality of service that the community we serve deserves and expects.

Special Operations provided by the Division include

  • Swift, Open, and Ice Water Rescue Capability
  • Hazardous Materials Responses
  • Confined Space, High Angle, and Trench Rescue Response Capabilities
  •  Wildfire Response Capabilities

More than a handful of our members are also members of Colorado Task Force 1, a federal urban search and rescue team. Our urban search and rescue team specialists have responded to several incidents of national significance, including Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, and Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008. Our wildfire team members also provide national response capabilities.

Although the primary responsibility of the Operations Division is to respond to emergency calls, members of the Division value the importance of injury and fire prevention.

Operations Division members support the mission of the organization by completing

  • Child Passenger Safety (Car Seat) Inspections
  • Home Safety Inspections
  • Smoke Alarm Installations
  • Providing a Wide Variety of Other Public Education Services.
