Community Wildfire Protection Plan

Arvada Fire's service area — the City of Arvada, the northern portion of the City of Wheat Ridge, and unincorporated Jefferson County —  includes grasses, open spaces, and homes in the Wildland Urban Interface or WUI. This area of transition between unoccupied land and human development poses considerable wildfire risks to those that live there and unique challenges for responding agencies such as Arvada Fire.

Fires in the Wildland Urban Interface are a growing problem nationally and concern locally. To reduce the risks of wildfire to our community, proactively mitigate hazards, and plan for emergencies, Arvada Fire is creating a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). This is a collaborative process that involves input from all stakeholders. The CWPP will be finalized and published by the end of 2023.

What is a CWPP?

A CWPP is designed to assist agencies such as Arvada Fire, county and municipal government, and residents in ensuring that a future wildfire is avoided or mitigated. Through a collaborative process, a CWPP identifies at-risk areas and makes recommendations for decreasing those risks through measures such as fuels reduction, structure protection, and public education. 

Why Develop a CWPP?

  • Outline mitigation and preparedness plan to work toward reducing wildfire risk.
  • Identify what influences wildfire risk, such as fuel conditions, structures, specific community values, and emergency response preparedness.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with federal, state, and local stakeholders BEFORE an event occurs.
  • Document planning and projects for garnering grant success.
  • Engage the community as a whole with buy-in from all stakeholders towards common goals.
  • Increase firefighter safety and defensible space for firefighter operations.
